Why Creatine Can Change Body Water
Creatine is an osmotically active compound. As muscle creatine stores rise, water can move with creatine into muscle cells to help maintain fluid balance. The detail that often gets lost online is that “water retention” is not one single visual outcome. Researchers may measure total body water, intracellular water (fluid inside cells), and extracellular water (fluid outside cells). Those compartments do not always change in the same way, and different studies have reported different patterns. [2,3]
For example, a controlled study in resistance-trained men and women found that creatine supplementation increased total body water along with body mass, without changing the distribution between intracellular and extracellular water. Other longer-term training studies summarized in a 2021 review found no significant increase in total body water in some groups. How Much Water Weight Can Creatine Add?

Does Creatine Cause Bloating?

Digestive symptoms are possible with creatine, although they are not universal. A randomized study of 59 male soccer players compared different creatine schedules with placebo for 28 days. The study did not find a significant group difference for bloating, nausea, abdominal pain, or several other GI symptoms, although a larger single serving was associated with more diarrhea than a split schedule or placebo. A 2025 review of creatine safety reached a similar practical conclusion: gastrointestinal effects appear to be mild and infrequent for many users but can occur, particularly in higher-dose situations. Why a Gummy, Powder, or Capsule May Feel Different
The creatine ingredient is only one part of a finished supplement.
